Why Test A Fire Alarm System?
In the
Any devices which are found to be faulty should be replaced at the earliest opportunity. A log book should be kept on site to record details such as dates and times of genuine, practise, tests or false alarms together with the cause of the alarm where known. Defects, faults and actions taken to rectify them should also be written down. A fire alarm should be annually inspected and tested by a qualified fire alarm engineer who will issue a certificate stating that the fire alarm is in good working order. The engineer will also report any faults which require rectification. During this annual service, every device will be tested to make sure it is working. Where an installation has smoke detectors these should be serviced and cleaned as there effectiveness can deteriorate with dust and age. The fire alarm batteries should be tested preferably by a digital battery tester which will display the stored capacity of the batteries. If the capacity is poor the batteries should be replaced. This will ensure the system can function in the event of a power cut. Fire alarm maintenance can save lives, is your system tested and working? Philip Hamer Magma Energy
